ACR denoising: Performance on current hardware
1 week ago

On my ThinkPad X1 Tablet 3rd gen, denoising an ARW from my Sony ZV-1 takes about 15 Minutes in ACR. I am using the default AI based denoising algorithm. When I connect my Nvidia A2000 12GB via Thunderbolt, the time drops to 15 Seconds.

Unfortunately, since a few days, the Thunderbolt connection doesn’t work anymore. This may be due to the ports finally giving up. The connection has been patchy for quite a while, independent of the cable used. Or it may be yet another Windows 11 Pro issue, maybe introduced with the latest cumulative update. Of course the Thunderbolt adapter could also be broken. Anyhow, from time to time I’m thinking about getting a new machine.

I rarely use denoising. But here is an example where I found it useful. It’s a snap during a night hike in Hong Kong, taken to identify what’s going on in that reservoir. We could barely see anything with the naked eye:

How long does it take on a more recent mobile device?

Mac or PC, I don’t mind.
